
John Kenneth O’Donnell, 74, passed away peacefully at home on September 6, 2022, surrounded by his loving wife, Delia, and his daughter, Colleen Elizabeth.
John was born in Evanston, Illinois to his parents, John and Marie O’Donnell (nee Gawler) onAugust 13, 1948. The family returned to New Jersey, where John lived his entire life.
John graduated from Saint Philomena grammar school (now AquinasAcademy), Essex Catholic High School, and William Paterson College, where he earned an M.S. with honors in criminal justice and urban education. He has numerous certifications and training in both the public and private sector.
John proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-72, completing his honorable service on the USS Intrepid and the USSYorktown. He is a charter member of the ships’associations today, supporting former crewmembers and our veterans.
Upon his return from service, John joined the Livingston Police Department in 1973, where he proudly served the community through 2010, achieving the rank of Captain, and as a teacher in the public school system and the Police Academy. John followed his retirement by continuing his service at Stevens Institute of Technology Police Department, and providing public safety services for children at Golda Ochs, Kushner Academy, and several schools and religious institutions.
John was a leader, teacher, mentor and passionate and loving friend to all who knew him. He was committed to a life of helping others and those in need. His kindness and strength will be with us always as a testament to a life well lived.
John married Delia (nee Grob) at Saint Philomena Roman Catholic Church in 1978. Their daughter, Colleen Elizabeth, completed their family and they had a joyful life filled with wonder, adventure, laughter and love. He is survived by his sister, Margaret “Peggy” Barnett (Robert) and was pre-deceased by sister, Diane Feltey (Thomas), and his brother, Kevin O’Donnell (Debbie). He was proud to be loving “Uncle John” in his family and community.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Saint Philomena Church on Monday, September 12. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Saint Philomena Church or to Livingston PBA Local #263. Quinn Hopping Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
