David Hsien-Chung Pai, 1936-2016

David Hsien-Chung Pai, 80, of Davidson, North Carolina, died Saturday morning, July 23, at the Levine-Dickson Hospice House. He was born January 7, 1936 in Guilin, China, the son of General Pai Chung-Hsi, the Chief of Staff in the Revolutionary Army that overthrew the last dynasty, and later, Minister of National Defense for Chiang Kai Shek. His mother was Ma P’ei-Chang. David was the seventh of ten children, and he had six brothers and three sisters. He immigrated to the United States in 1952. The military was a strong influence in his life. He graduated from LaSalle Military Academy in 1954, and was a 1958 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. Pai received his Master’s degree in 1960 from Lehigh University, and a PhD. in 1965 from New York University. He worked his entire 41-year career at Foster Wheeler Corporation, an engineering firm, and retired in 2001 as President and CEO of Foster Wheeler Development Corporation. He authored or co-authored more than 50 papers, edited two books, and holds four patents. He was Vice President and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1994, one of the highest honors conferred on engineers. His tenure at Foster Wheeler included achievements in nuclear research and component design, and he contributed to the DOE Clean Coal Technology Design. In 1985 he led a group of engineers to China with the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program begun by President Eisenhower for the purpose of technical exchange. David was recommended as the leader by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his work in the Pressure Vessel and Piping Division of the ASME. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Pai enjoyed golf, tennis, was a scholar in Chinese history, and an avid follower of current events. He followed his beloved New York Giants football team, the New York Knicks, and the Duke University Basketball Program. He was an avid and excellent bridge player. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dr. Anna Chao Pai; two sons, Ben Pai and his wife Susan of Charlotte, and Michael Pai and his wife Dr. Katherine Noonan of Portland, Oregon; one sister, Diana Hsieh of Pittsboro, North Carolina, two brothers, Kenneth and Albert, both of Taiwan, and four grandchildren: Leanna, Keith, Aidan, and Nathan. He is sorely missed by all. Interment will be at Ferncliff Cemetary in Hartsdale, New York.

Louis (Lou) V. Mangiaracina

Louis (Lou) V. Mangiaracina died at his home in Livingston, New Jersey, on July 20, 2016. Family and friends were invited to visit on Monday, July 25, at La Monica Funeral Home, Livingston. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, July 26, at St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church, Livingston. Burial followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, New Jersey. Lou was born on January 18, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, the sixth child of George and Angela Mangiaracina, and was raised in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Lou and his beloved wife, Giselda, lived in Bloomfield, Newark, and Oregon before settling in Livingston in 1959. Lou was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Giselda. He is survived by his children, Concetta (Darrell) Buckner, George (Michele) Mangiaracina, Angela (Peter) Castagna, and Louis (Marianne) Mangiaracina; his grandchildren, Matthew and Benjamin Buckner, Louis (Dayna), George and Kaela Mangiaracina, Noelle, Cara and Kristen Castagna, Arielle, Michael and Leah Mangiaracina; and one great-grandchild Jayden. In addition to his beloved wife, he was pre-deceased by his parents, and his siblings, George, Palma, Russ, Leonarda, Louis and Anthony. Lou proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the occupation in Germany. Always the life of the party, Lou found humor in even the dark moments of life. He loved a great "caper," and was the mastermind of many a "caper" that brought boisterous laughter to his accomplices and the recipients. Lou was an insurance salesman for Prudential for 43 years, retiring 22 years ago. One of the founding members, he was active in St. Raphael Parish and School. A history buff, Lou traveled extensively, embracing the world, inspired and in awe of walking the same paths as those who came before. He was generous of heart and spirit, an uber Dad, and the person his family will always aspire to emulate. He believed and instilled in his family an ethic of hard work, taking risks, and a passion for life. We will miss you Dad, thank you for being ours, and we count ourselves as blessed for having you as our father and grandfather. Miriam Weiker

Miriam Weiker (nee Bierman), 81 years old, passed away on July 30, 2016. She was a 51 year resident of Livingston. She was the beloved wife of Walter Weiker, to whom she was married for 35 wonderful years before he predeceased her in 1997. She was the beloved mother of Daniel and Gail and five grandchildren, and loving sister to Arie Bierman. The funeral was August 1, 2016. Shiva will be observed through Sunday, August 7. Miriam was born in Holland and immigrated to New York at a young age. She was graduated from City College in New York and had various jobs – most recently with the UJA Federation of Metro West. She was active in various causes, including the American Jewish Congress. To all who knew her, she was loved very much and will be very missed.

Funeral Services Held For Mary A. Visconti

Mary A. (Christy) Visconti, 86, died on July 28 at University Medical Center of Princeton. Funeral arrangements were by the Lester Memorial Home in Jamesburg. Born in Queens, New York, Mrs. Visconti lived in Livingston for 50 years before residing in the Rossmoor Adult Community in Monroe Township. Mrs. Visconti earned a B.A. from Montclair State University and was employed with Schenley Industries in Manhattan. She is survived by her husband, John; a daughter, Nina Visconti Phillips and her husband, Robert; a son, Lucas Visconti; and two grandchildren.

Michael Pelaez Dies at Age 30

Michael J. Pelaez died Tuesday, August 2, in Livingston, at the age of 30. Visitation with a prayer service was held on Sunday, August 7, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. The funeral service was held on Monday, August 8, at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans' Cemetery in Wrightstown. Born and raised in Livingston, Mr. Pelaez was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees, serving four years active duty across the U.S., Guam, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Jack Dalakian and Manuel Pelaez, both of whom were veterans. Mr. Pelaez is survived by his parents, Ray and Gail Pelaez; his brothers, Richard and Jonathan; his sister-in-law, Jennifer; and his grandmothers, Lucy Dalakian and Ana Pelaez. The family has suggested that donations in his name be made to the St. Mary Armenian Church Endowment Fund, 200 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, N.J. 07039.

John C. Coyne

John Christopher Coyne, 87, passed away on August 7, 2016. His family received relatives and friends at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, 145 East Mt. Pleasant Ave., on Wednesday, August 10. The Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Philomena’s Church, 386 South Livingston Avenue, Livingston, today, Thursday, August 11, at 10 A.M., followed by the committal service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. John was born in Ahalative, Creggs, County Gallaway, Ireland, immigrated to the U.S. in June, 1956, and had lived over 50 years in Livingston, NJ. He was a plasterer but retired from Local #68 of the Operating Engineers Union. John was also an active member of St. Philomena’s Church in Livingston. Above all, John was very proud of his Irish heritage and instilled the same in his children, grandchildren and all who knew him. Predeceased by his beloved wife Eileen (Higgins), he is survived by his devoted children, Michael J. and wife Aine; Thomas J. and wife Mary; Eileen M. Halligan and husband Timothy; Lisa Ann Brady and husband Michael; and his loving grandchildren, Kelly, John, Megan, Maisy and Gavin Coyne and Caitlin and Deirdre Brady. John is also survived by his siblings, Bridie and Tommie, and many nieces and nephews in Ireland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Livingston First Aid Squad.

John J. Valentine

Beloved Father and Grandfather, World War II Veteran & Realtor John J. Valentine, 92, passed away on August 9, 2016. Relatives and friends are invited for visiting hours on Thursday, August 11, from 4 to 8 P.M. at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home at 145 East Mount Pleasant Avenue, Livingston. A Prayer Service will be offered on Friday, August 12, at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. He was born in New York City and served in the Army in World War II as a T-5 Corporal Technician in the European Theater, primarily in Holland with the 204th Infantry (Timberwolf) Division. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Services Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, American Service Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal with German Clasp. After the war, Mr. Valentine attended Pace University and worked at Chubb & Sons, Inc. in its Finance Department. In 1957, he moved to Livingston, where he raised his children with their mother, Tina Valentine. He was a member of the Livingston Auxiliary Police Department, the Knights of Columbus Council in Livingston, and the Livingston VFW. He was a music enthusiast, saw Sinatra at the Paramount, and was even the Garden State Distributor of the DiscoScene magazine, a forerunner to Rolling Stone. Mr. Valentine moved to Roseland in 1979. There he was President of Valentine Associates as a successful commercial realtor and a former Board of Directors member of Stonegate of Roseland. He was the former Commander of the Roseland Military Order of the Purple Heart and would visit veterans at local nursing homes. He was honored in 2009 as the Senior Citizen of the Year in Roseland. Surviving are his son, Ron Valentine, his wife Betsy (Kostibos) and their children, Craig and Jenna; his son, Mark Valentine, his children, Jonathan and Alexia, and his wife Sonia (children Andrea, Alyssa); Tina Valentine; his sister, Lucille Cestaro; and his longtime partner, Rose Brady and her family.

Former Livingston resident Marie A. Goldrick died in her Middletown home on August 8 at the age of 87. Visitation will be held today, Thursday, August 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, August 12, at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. She worked for Western Electric for many years and then for the Monmouth County Board of Realtors when she moved to Middletown. She retired in the 1980s. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis P. Goldrick, in 2015; her daughter, Kathleen Wilson; her sisters, Bartolomea and Giovannina; and her brother, John Battista. Mrs. Goldrick is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Pam Goldrick; her son-in-law, Robert Wilson; and two grandchildren. Gloria M. Miserendino, 88, of Stillwater, formerly of Livingston, died Friday, August 5, at her home. She was 88 years old. Visitation took place on Monday, August 8, at the Tuttle Funeral Home in Randolph, with funeral services held there on Tuesday, August 9. Entombment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Mrs. Miserendino was born in Newark and later lived in Livingston. She had been a resident of Stillwater for more than 26 years. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Frank; four children, Rocca Molteni of Stillwater; Nicholas G. Miserendino and his wife, Tammy, of Andover; Henrietta Hink and her husband, Fred, of Hopatcong; and Anthony J. Miserendino and his wife, Tracy, of Knowlton; her brother, John P. Ulianiello and his wife, Dolores; and seven grandchildren. The family has suggested that donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.

Mass Offered Tuesday For John J. Hengstler

John J. Hengstler, 83, died Thursday, August 4. Born in Jersey City, Mr. Hengstler was a long-time resident of Livingston. He worked for 39 years for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler, before his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hengstler is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ronnie (nee Hassett). He is also survived by his daughters, Karen Iaconetti (Anthony), Laurie Hathaway (John), and Suzanne Hengstler (Joseph); his sister, Rose Olsen; and seven grandchildren. Visitation was held on Monday, August 8 at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, August 9, at St. Raphael’s Church, Livingston, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. William Waldron

William (Bill) Waldron, 72, passed away on August 9, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born on December 17, 1943 in Orange, New Jersey, to the late George and Harriet Waldron. After High School, Bill proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for four years. After his time in the Marine Corps, he returned to Livingston, New Jersey and became a letter carrier until he retired. He was a member of the Elks and enjoyed the camaraderie of meeting the guys after work. He moved to Arizona in 2005. Bill is survived by his brothers, James (Elaine), and Michael (Debra); his sister-in-law, Eileen; and his brother-in-law, Martin Balassone. He is also survived by four nieces and eight nephews who would make him light up whenever they were around. Bill was preceded in death by his sisters, Harriet Balassone and Katherine Mindo; and his brother, George. A visitation was held on Monday, August 15, 2016 at Heritage Funeral Chapel, Peoria, Arizona, with a funeral service immediately following. Graveside services with military honors were subsequently held at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. In lieu of fl owers, donations may be made to Companion Hospice, 1930 South Alma School Rd., Mesa, AZ 85210. “Say not in grief he is no more, but live in the thankfulness that he was.”

Norma Paul Benisch

Norma Paul Benisch, 91, of Livingston, NJ and Key Largo, FL, passed away Monday, August 15, 2016. Norma graduated from Caldwell High School in 1942, attended Ohio University, and graduated from New York University in 1946. Mrs. Benisch was an active community volunteer, serving on the Speakers’ Bureau of the United Jewish Appeal, Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations: as Chapter and Region President, and National Board Member of the Women’s American ORT, Scholarship Chair and Officer at the Jewish Vocational Service of Essex County. She was also Personnel Chair and Board Member of Planned Parenthood of Essex County and Honorary Board Member of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, South Orange, where she was the driving force behind the preservation and restoration of the KIP/ RIKER Mansion. Mrs. Benisch was a member of the Mountain Ridge Country Club, West Caldwell and the Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, FL. Wife of 61 years to the late Abner Benisch, she is survived by her son, Joel Benisch, and daughter, Barbara Benisch; three grandchildren, Grettyl, Cody, and Garrett Benisch; and great-grandson Evan Benisch. A Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, 32 Scotland Road, South Orange. Burial will follow in B’nai Jeshurun Cemetery, Hillside. Funeral Mass Offered For Frank X. Dietrick

Frank X. Dietrick, 83, a longtime resident of Livingston, died on August 10. Arrangements were by the Leonardis Memorial Home, Florham Park. Mr. Dietrick was born and raised in Pittston, Pennsylvania, prior to moving to Livingston. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired after many years as a foreman for the Livingston Recreation Department. He was the husband of Maria T. (Antonelli) for 56 years. He was the father of Deborah D'Angelo, and her husband, Angelo; Louise Primavera and her husband, Louis; Rob Dietrick, Anneliese Dietrick, and the late Frank Dietrick, Jr. He is also survived by six grandchildren. Mr. Dietrick was the last surviving of nine siblings. The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Adeline Sares

Adeline Sares went with the angels quietly on Sunday, August 14, 2016. She was 92. She was born in Machala, Ecuador, and studied to be a registered nurse under the supervision of the U.S. Army. Adeline left Ecuador for New York City and was hired at St. Luke’s Hospital. She later relocated to New Jersey and started working for Jersey City Medical Center. She was always reaching for more and saw opportunities at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Newark, NJ. She moved with the hospital to Livingston, NJ and acted in an administrative position in the operating room for more than 25 years. Life was not always easy for her in the United States, but her work ethic opened doors and helped those who came after her. Adeline loved her profession and continued volunteering at Saint Barnabas after she retired. Always one to extend a helping hand, she is an extended family member to many. She had courage, strength, and was a hero to many she left behind in Ecuador. Family was very important to her, and she would visit them yearly and embrace their hopes and ambitions for a better life. The funeral will take place from the Galante Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Ave., Caldwell, on Thursday, August 18, at 8:30 a.m. The funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Philomena Church, Livingston. Entombment will be at Gate of Heave ChapelMausoleum in East Hanover. Visitation took place on Wednesday, August 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Born in Orange, Mrs. Peda was a homemaker and lived in Belleville, until 2007, when she moved to Livingston. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Peda; her brothers, Ralph, Anthony Jr., Vincent and Sonny DeBellonia; and her son in-law, Robert Zwigard. She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Perna and her husband, Nicholas, and Marlene Zwigard; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Hold Graveside Services For Geraldine Rosenthal

Geraldine Elaine Rosenthal (nee Cohen), 85, of Parsippany, died August 16 after a battle with dementia. Born in Newark, Mrs. Rosenthal lived in Livingston and Williamstown, and for the last fi ve years in Parsippany with her daughter and son-in-law. Married in 1951, she moved to Irvington, and started her family with her late husband, Alvin. She spent many years in Livingston, where she was a volunteer librarian at Riker Hill School and then worked as a compound distributor at Schering-Plough until her retirement. Mrs. Rosenthal held a B.S. from Rutgers University. Surviving are her daughter, Emily Suydam and her husband, Tyler; her son, Robert; and one grandchild. Arrangements were under the direction of the Par-Troy Funeral Home, Parsippany.

Mary C. Ripley

Mary C. Ripley, 93, was born on April 5, 1923 in Decatur, Alabama to Katherine (Letson) and Joseph Richardson. She died on August 14, 2016. She spent her early life through high school in Moulton, Alabama. During her freshman year at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, she met her husband, Ames A. Ripley. They were married in 1942 and after Ames served in the Army during World War II, they moved to Syracuse, New York. Mary had several jobs through the years while her husband attended Syracuse University and later Ohio State University. She worked at General Electric in Syracuse, and when they moved to Earlville, New York, she became the Town Clerk for many years and worked as a clerk for a local lawyer. She was very active in the Earlville Baptist Church and helped organize the Cub Scout program in Earlville. After they moved to Livingston, New Jersey, she continued to be active in the Livingston Baptist Church and worked at a Burelle’s Press Clipping Bureau for several years as a head reader. Mary and Ames loved to travel and visited all 50 states in the U.S., and Mary went to 27 countries around the world. In 1984, they retired to Boynton Beach, Florida, where she became an avid golfer, playing in two women’s leagues and achieving fi ve holes-in-one along with winning several trophies in tournaments. She was also a very good bridge player and joined the duplicate bridge group after her husband passed away. Mary was also very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Boynton Beach, Florida, and served as a greeter, Circle Leader and Elder of the church. Mary’s family was very important to her and she loved and enjoyed each new member of the family. She encouraged each person to do their best and was proud of all of their achievements. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Ames and oldest son, Randall A. Ripley. She is survived by her son, Larry B. Ripley of Morris Plains, New Jersey' and her daughters, Kathryn H. Fisher of Unadilla, New York and Linda S. Ripley of Budd Lake, New Jersey. She has ten grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Donations in memory of Mary Ripley can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Boynton Beach, 235 SW 6th Avenue, Boynton Beach, FL 33435, or to the Rotary Gift of Life Program, P.O. Box 25, Morris Plains, NJ 07950. Private services for the family will be held at a later date. Her ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden of the Federated Church in Livingston, New Jersey, along with those of her husband and son.

Margaret June O'Connell (nee Donnelly), 90, of Livingston, died on August 23. Born and raised in East Orange, Mrs. O'Connell moved to Livingston 55 years ago. A graduate of Mount Saint Dominic Academy, she went on to Berkeley College School of Business. She began her work career at Massachusetts Mutual in Newark and was employed by Tribune Publishing in Livingston. She was a long-time active member of St. Philomena's Church in Livingston, including its Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3533 Ladies' Auxiliary; Livingston VFW Post 2856 Ladies; Auxiliary; the Livingston AARP Chapter; and the Oak Leaf Senior Ladies. Mrs. O'Connell was predeceased by her husband, Joseph "Pat" O'Connell. Surviving are her daughters, Kathleen Geiling and her husband, Doug, and Patricia Mastras and her husband, Mark; and four grandchildren. Gloria T. Zwick, 57 Dies at Saint Barnabas

Gloria T. Zwick of Livingston died on Monday, August 22, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. She was 57 years old. Ms. Zwick was born in the Bronx, New York, and lived in Madison before moving to Livingston 14 years ago. She was a substitute elementary school teacher for the Madison Board of Education for three years. Prior to this, she worked at CVS in Chatham Township for four years and was a CCD teacher at St. Rose of Lima in East Hanover for one year. Ms. Zwick was a graduate of St. Elizabeth College in Convent Station, where she earned a B.S. in business administration. She was a past member of the Rosary Society of St. Patrick Church in Chatham, and a past secretary of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps. She is survived by her son, Karl H. Zwick; her parents, Henry and Theresa (Karasch) Zwick; and her brother and sisters, Henry Patrick Zwick, Linda Marie Zienowicz, and Diana Magdalena Von Zwick. The family has requested that donations may be made in her memory to Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Mass Offered Aug. 27 For Alexander Beatrice

Former Livingston resident Alexander J. Beatrice died Tuesday, August 23, at Morristown Medical Center. He was 85 years old. Arrangements were by the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. Mr. Beatrice was born in Orange and had lived in Livingston before moving to Montville in 1995; he also maintained a winter residence in Fort Myers, Florida. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and then received his accounting degree from Rutgers University. He had worked for Supermatic Packaging as vice president, but also maintained his own certified public accounting firm. Mr. Beatrice had coached Little League baseball and ice hockey in Livingston. He was also a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary (Scudese); his children, Alexander, Jr. and his wife Rita; Cathi Hynes and her husband, Douglas; Sue Lepore and her husband, Chris; John and his wife, Monica; and Mary Hahn and her husband, Paul. He is also survived by his brother, Anthony; and 15 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made in Mr. Beatrice's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
