Services Held March 17 For Milton Schaeffer

Milton Schaeffer of Livingston died March 14. He was 89 years old.

Born in Newark, he had also lived in West Orange before moving to Livingston 49 years ago.

Mr. Schaeffer was a teacher for the Newark school system for 13 years and for the Maplewood and South Orange School District for another 27 years before retiring. His 40 year career in education included serving in positions such as acting principal of the South Orange Middle School and English Department chairman.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

AWorld Chess Federation player, he was involved in and organized camping for children.

He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Geri; his son, Matt; his daughter, Talya (Matthew Cheng); two sisters, Lillian Gruber and Florence Grossman; and one grandchild.

Services were held March 17 with arrangements by the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the American Kidney Fund.

In 1925, Mrs. Margaret Morrow of the Women’s Auxiliary of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, founded the first troop of Girl Scouts in Livingston.

Antoinette Carlucci died in Livingston on Tuesday, March 26. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Carlucci was predeceased by her husband, Anselmo “John;” her son, John; and her son-in-law, Edward Frank. She is survived by her children Rosemarie Frank, David, and James and his wife, Gina; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. A funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, March 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Philomena Church, Livingston, with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Edda Kaufman

Beloved Mother & Grandmother Formerly of Livingston

Edda Kaufman, 92, formerly of Livingston, passed away March 26 surrounded by her loving family.

Edda was born in Philadelphia and was a Livingston resident for 25 years before moving to West Orange.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 27, at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.

Mrs. Kaufman was predeceased by her husband, devoting her life to raising her two young boys.

Edda was a legal secretary. She had many hobbies and interests. Always with a book by her side, she was an avid reader. She was also an artist, with many of her works displayed at local art shows. Other interests included golf, hiking, and travel. Being a grandmother to Samantha and Alex was her greatest joy.

Edda was the devoted mother of Andy (Gina), Bob (Lori); proud grandmother of Samantha (Andy), and Alex.

Offer Mass Thursday For Vincent Simonetti

Vincent F. Simonetti died in his Livingston home on Sunday, March 31, at the age of 94.

Visitation was held yesterday, Wednesday, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. A funeral Mass will be offered today, Thursday, April 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Philomena’s Roman Catholic Church in Livingston. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Mr. Simonetti was born on April 29, 1924, in Orange. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the American Legion as well as Livingston VFW Post 2856.

A certified public accountant, Mr. Simonetti worked as comptroller for Trans World Oil, from which he retired in 1986. In addition, he was a member of the New Jersey Society of CPAs and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Mr. Simonetti was predeceased by Ann, his wife of 55 years. He is survived by his children, Marianne Simonetti and her husband, Joseph Simonetti; Lucille Perrone and her husband, Anthony; and Domenic Simonetti and his wife, Rosemary; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Mr. Simonetti’s memory be made to the following charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org); Smile Train (smiletrain.org); or the Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org).

Mass Was Celebrated For Margaret Reed

Margaret Louise (Burrows) Reed, who raised her children in Livingston, died on April 6 at her home in Dennis, Massachusetts. She was 93 years old.

Her husband, Leonard Tynan Reed, died in 2009.

Born in Orange and raised in Montclair, Mrs. Reed graduated from Montclair High School in 1943. She attended Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and graduated from the Seton Hall University School of Nursing Education in 1953.

Mrs. Reed was a member of the Rosary Society at St. Philomena’s Church. She and her husband retired to Cape Cod in 1983.

She is survived by her three sons, Richard Tynan Reed (Carol) of Bedford, Massachusetts; Robert Burrows Reed (Mary) of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts; and Douglas Edward Reed (Missy) of Stow, Massachusetts; her daughter, Virginia Anne Reed Brett (Neil) of North Grafton, Massachusetts, as well as six grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

A funeral Mass was held on April 10 at Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster, Massachusetts.

The family suggests that donations may be made to the Cape Cod Genealogy Society (capecodgenealogy.org) or the charity of one’s choice.

Services Were Held For Dr. Lillian Brunell

Dr. Lillian Brunell, who raised her family in Livingston, died in her sleep on Sunday, April 7.

Born in New York on January 6, 1926, she earned a degree in psychology from City College and a Psy.D. at Rutgers University. She served as chief of psychology at the Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove and later ran a private practice in West Orange. She co-authored a book on multi-modal treatment and received the Peterson prize for distinguished contributions in the field of psychology.

Dr. Brunell is survived by her husband, Karl, whom she married in 1947; her daughters, Merrilea Brunell (Jeff Brutman) and Hilary Monaco (Larry); her four grandchildren, and her three great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 9, at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston.

Private Services For Monroe Bierman

Monroe Bierman of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Livingston, died April 15 at the age of 88.

Mr. Bierman graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark in 1948. He went on to attend Rutgers University Business School and graduated in 1952. He served as a sergeant in the Korean War.

He owned Fitrite Fashions in Newark, and served as president of the Springfield Avenue Merchants’ Association for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbi Fechtner Bierman; his sister, Beverly Albert of New York City; his daughters, Amie, and her husband, Steven, and Heidi and her husband, Michael; his son, David, and his wife, Elyse; and eight grandchildren and two grandsons-in law.

Graveside services were private. Visitation will take place at the family home today, Thursday, April 18, between 3 and 9 p.m.

The family has suggested that donations be made to parkinsonfoundation.org.

Jake Kestler, 14, Succumbs to Cancer

Jake Ian Kestler of Livingston died peacefully on Thursday, April 11, after battling two different cancers during his short life. He was surrounded by his family.

Born on December 3, 2004, Jake survived a battle with leukemia in 2012 after receiving a bone marrow transplant from his then five-year-old sister, Lily. Jake’s courage inspired the formation of Team Jake which raised more than $300,000 for rare cancer research.

Jake loved his family and friends, adventures of all kinds, and food and eating at different restaurants. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Jake is survived by his mother and father, Joshua and Gallite Kestler; his sister, Lily; his brother, Luke; and his grandparents, Efraim and Lea Rajs, Judith and Marc Apirian, and Dr.

Services Were Held For Jules Blaustein

Jules B. Blaustein 98, of Livingston died on March 19.

Born in Newark, he also lived in Springfield, Short Hills and Boca Raton, Florida.

Mr. Blaustein graduated from the University of Newark, now Rutgers University. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and worked for the family business, M. Blaustein Furs.

Predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Irene Blaustein, he is survived by his three daughters, Lauren (Lloyd) Perkel, Barbara (Roy) Levine, and Carol (Paul) Barnhard; his sister, Miriam Friedman; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were made by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel.

Services Were Held For Karl Brunell

Karl Brunell, 96, formerly of Livingston, died in his sleep on Friday, April 12, five days after his wife, Dr. Lillian Brunell. The funeral service was held on Sunday, April 14, at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Brunell was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1922, and came to the United States in 1939 to escape Nazi Germany. He worked as a machinist and earned a GED at night.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, Mr. Brunell became a Second Lieutenant and was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery.

Earning an engineering degree at City College, Mr. Brunell worked at Bell and Howell Labs, the American Company, and John Dusenbury Company, and held several engineering patents. He married in 1947 and raised two daughters.

Mr.Brunell issurvivedbyhissister, Adele Obodov; his daughters, Merrilea Brunell (Jeff) and Hilary (Larry) Monaco; his four grandchildren; and his four great-grandchildren.

Services Were Held For Marvin Schwalb

Dr. Marvin Schwalb of Livingston died on April 10.

He was a professor of microbiology and molecular genetics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for over 45 years and also served as the associate director of the Institute of Genomic Medicine.

Predeceased by his brother, Bruce, Dr. Schwalb is survived by Karen, his wife of 56 years; his daughters, Robin, Heidi and Abby; and his sister, Karen.

Hold Graveside Services For Joan M. Goldsmith

Joan Morrison Goldsmith of Livingston, died April 16 of pneumonia. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Goldsmith was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1930 and was raised in both Buffalo and in Birmingham, Alabama.

She was a professional artist for most of her adult life. She trained at the Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia, the Art Students’ League of New York, and the New School for Social Research. Early in her career, she worked as a shoe designer in New York City.

From 1978 to 1987, Mrs. Goldsmith was on the faculty of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in Summit. During the early 1990s, she was an artist-in-residence at the Newark Museum and was on the Museum’s Arts Workshop faculty. She was a member of the Phoenix Gallery in Soho, and had solo exhibitions there in the 1980s and 1990s. Her work was featured in solo and juried group exhibitions throughout the northeastern United States as well as inAlabama and Washington State, and is included in public collections in New York, New Jersey, Alabama, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

Mrs. Goldsmith is survived by her husband, David L. Goldsmith; her children, Amy Charmatz, Peter Goldsmith, and Jane Davis; and two grandchildren.

Aprivate graveside service was held for close family members.

Funeral Held April 19 For Arthur Tevanian

Arthur Tevanian of Livingston died Monday, April 15, following a period of declining health. He was 92.

Visitation and the funeral service were held Friday, April 19, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. The funeral service took place at the funeral home during the visitation at 5:30 p.m. There will be a private cremation with the interment of cremated remains in Portland, Maine, at a later date.

Mr. Tevanian was born on December 12, 1926, in Portland, Maine. He left high school to enlist in the Navy during World War II, later returning to earn his diploma from Portland High School. He earned a degree in business from the University of Maine, where he was in the Army ROTC. He then served in the Korean War, during which he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor.

He married Sylvia Mardigan in 1957, and his work brought them from Maine to Connecticut and then Livingston. He worked for the W.T. Grant Co. for more than 20 years, and later was co-owner of two beauty salons and a graphics arts business.

In his retirement, he volunteered with Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He was also involved in the Old Guard, the JCC and the Elks. He was active in St. Mary Armenian Apostolic Church for 50 years, including as a member of the Parish Council.

Mr. Tevanian is survived by his daughter, Elisabeth, and her husband, Evan Miles, of Livingston; his sister, Patricia Tevanian of Portland, Maine; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia; his son, Jeffrey; his brother, Casper and his wife, Ida; his brother, William; and his sister, Agnes.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in Mr.Tevanian’s name be made to the St. Mary Armenian Apostolic Church Endowment Fund, 200 W. Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, NJ 07039.

Kathleen M. Drew, 95, of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, formerly of Livingston, died Friday, April 19.

Born August 20, 1923, in Newark, she was the wife of the late Harold (Don) Drew.

Mrs. Drew is survived by her three children and their spouses, Donald Drew and his wife, Mary Jane of Westbrook, Connecticut; Joseph Drew and his wife, Susan of Rockaway; Kathleen Drew of Livingston; five grandchildren; and her niece, Mary Macchi, who cared for her in her later years. She was predeceased by her brothers, Harry Towle, Donald Towle, Charlie Towle,TomTowle, JosephTowle, and her sister, Jo Macchi.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 26, at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Avenue, Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Memorial Service May 5 For George C. Andreasen

George C. Andreasen Sr. of Livingston, and Pittsfield, Massachusetts, died Thursday, April 18.

AMemorial Gathering will be held at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, NJ, on Sunday, May 5, from 2 to 5 p.m. with a memorial service at 4:30 p.m.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Andreasen resided in Livingston for 55 years. He was a graduate of University of Nebraska, where he received a degree in electrical engineering. Following a 39 year career with Westinghouse Electric (N.A. Phillips Lighting), he retired in 1991 and became a member of the Livingston Old Guard.

Mr. Andreasen was predeceased by his wife, Pauline V. Andreasen, and his brothers, Harry and Sonny Andreasen. He is survived by his children, Chris (Pam), David (Laura), Carl (Michelle) Andreasen, and Dorothy (Jim) Remler; and 12 grandchildren.

Celebration of Life Held for Amy Feeney

Amy S. Feeney, 52, of Basking Ridge, formerly of Livingston, died Wednesday, April 24. Visitation was held Sunday, April 28, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, with a celebration of her life held there on Monday, April 29. Cremation was private.

Ms. Feeney was born in Orange, to the late Vincent and Grace Feeney, and attended Livingston High School.

She was the sister of Michael Feeney (Charlotte), Janice Salomone (late Robert), Kenneth Feeney (Susan), and Barbara Jaeger (Michael). She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.

Service Held April 27 For Barbara A. Schott

Barbara A. Schott of Livingston died Monday, April 15. She was 85 years old.

Visitation was held on Saturday, April 27, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, followed by a chapel service there. Interment took place at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.

Mrs. Schott was born and raised in Jersey City, and lived there before moving to Livingston to live with her sister and husband. She worked as a waitress in Jersey City for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Helmut Schott; her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and William Woodin, and her brothers-in-law, Joseph Hoffman and Louis Gurry.

She is survived by her sistersin-law, Adeline Hoffman and Betty Gurry, and her nieces, Donna Jackson (Roy), Janice Hoffman (Dean), Carol Filak (Michael), and Laura Buzzard, and her nephew, Robert Gurry (Holly).

Chapel Service Held For Rose Liebman, 79

Rose Liebman of West Orange, formerly of Livingston, died Sunday, April 21, at the age of 79.

A chapel service took place on Wednesday, April 24 at Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union. Interment followed at King Solomon Cemetery, Clifton.

Mrs. Liebman was born in Newark and resided in Irvington, Roselle Park, Hazelton, Pennsylvania, and in Livingston for 25 years, before moving to West Orange.

She attended Irvington High School and Fairleigh Dickinson University. A homemaker, she was a member of Hadassah and the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Auxiliary, for which she volunteered for over 30 years.

Mrs. Liebman is survived by her husband of 58 years, Norman; her daughters, Gail Meadow and her husband, Craig, and Stacey Smith and her husband, Richard; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society and to Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

Gloria Ann Burke, 90, of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, formerly of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Philomena Church, 386 South Livingston Avenue, Livingston, New Jersey on Friday, April 26, at 10:30 a.m.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Adolph and Mary Ellen Grube, Gloria was baptized at St. Aedan’s Church in Jersey City and attended St. Dominic Academy. She was a parishioner at St. Philomena Church for over 58 years, and was an active member of the Rosary Altar Society. She worked at AmericanBanker,apublicationfor the banking industry, in Manhattan as a Senior Manager.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Raymond Burke; her loving children, Maryellen (Burke) and Paul Ahlborn, Raymond Burke, Jr. and Kinga Burke, Mark and Vicki Burke, and Ken and Rosella Burke; her cherished grandchildren, Wesley Ahlborn, Lindsay Ahlborn, Kira Burke, Thomas Burke, Quinlan Burke, Megan Burke, Aidan Burke, Michael and Sarah Burke, Lauren Burke and Zach Campo, Kevin Burke, and R.J. Ceravolo; her great-granddaughter, Ellie Burke; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Adolf and Mary Ellen Grube; her brother, Harry Grube; andherdaughter,Kathleen(Burke) Ceravolo.

Her favorite saying was “My cup runneth over,” and it did – with family, love, laughter, and friendships.

Funeral Mass Offered For Renee Lopomo, 94

Renee Lopomo of Livingston died Thursday, May 2. She was 94 years old. Visitation took place Monday, May 6, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. A funeral Mass was offered Tuesday, May 7, at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church. A committal service followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Mrs. Lopomo was born in Newark and lived there until 1962, when she moved to Livingston. She was a parishioner of St. Philomena Church, and volunteered at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. She also worked for Sunlight Life as a secretary, and was a judge for the Essex County Board of Elections polling centers.

Mrs. Lopomo was predeceased by her husband, Rocco, and her brother, Benjamin Sciarrillo and his wife, Geraldine. She is survived by her children, Patricia Biello, and Rocco Lopomo, Jr.; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations in Mrs. Lopomo’s name be made to the Green Brook Regional Center Family and Friends Association, P.O. Box 6671, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.
