Dorothy Panzer Kurzweil

Dorothy Panzer Kurzweil of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2016. Born to the late Belle and Benjamin Panzer, she was the beloved wife of the late Milburn S. Kurzweil; sister to her beloved siblings Hy and Irving Panzer, Irving Magenheim, Herbert Magenheim, and Lillian Sylvin; devoted mother of Brett Kurzweil of Garfield, New Jersey, Drew Kurzweil of New Orleans, Louisiana, Ross Kurzweil of New York City (Nancy Chin); and Shawn Kurzweil of Livingston (Adam Abelew); and loving grandmother of Danielle Kurzweil, and Madeline and Sophie Abelew. Funeral services will be conducted from the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Beth David Memorial Park, Kenilworth, New Jersey. Cremation Is Private For Michael G. Melo

Michael George Melo, Sr. of Livingston, died Tuesday, November 8, in Livingston. He was 81 years old. Born in Newark, he was a long-time resident of Livingston. Mr. Melo was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served overseas during the Korean Confl ict. He was the past Exalted Ruler of the Livingston Elks’ Lodge 1855, and owned F&M Body Shop in East Orange for 25 years. Mr. Melo is survived by his wife of 60 years, Theresa; his daughter, Stephanie Melo and her husband Richard Narey; his son, Michael Jr.; his sister, Jennie; and one grandchild. He was predeceased by his siblings, Arthur, Louise, and Frankie. The family has suggested that donations be made in Mr. Melo’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Funeral arrangements were by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston.

Mrs. Luciano was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayfl ower Society. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold Dickson and Evelyn Rowe. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Anthony; her children, Leonard (Lisa), Michael (Gina), Thomas (Joanne), and Tracy Ann; five grandchildren; her brother, Howie Rowe; and her sister, Janet Rowe.

Francis Joseph Brennan

Francis Joseph Brennan of Roseland, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 13, 2016. He was 84. Born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, on November 29, 1931, he was the son of a coal miner and factory worker. He attended Notre Dame University, and went on to a nearly 40-year career in global finance with the W.R. Grace & Co. in New York City. He was the son of the late Martin F. (a union organizer who helped establish the United Mine Workers of America) and Elizabeth (Higgins) Brennan. He was a graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School, where he played football, worked as a life guard, and attended his senior prom in 1949 with a classmate, the former Jeanne Burns. Mr. Brennan studied economics at Notre Dame University, and was graduated with honors in 1953. He served with the U.S. Army in Munich, Germany. Returning stateside, he began his distinguished career in finance in New York City and rekindled a romance with his senior prom date. Francis and Jeanne were married on November 30, 1957 and lived for many years with their children, Marty and Nancy Brennan, in Livingston and Roseland, New Jersey. Mr. Brennan’s 37-year career was mostly in acquisitions and corporate finance with W.R. Grace & Co. He traveled extensively for work, and helped lead the company’s expansion into South America. He was one of the last American businessmen to leave Cuba when Fidel Castro took power. He retired in 1993 as Senior Vice President and Treasurer. A devoted Catholic, he worked after retirement with the Archdiocese of New York during the restructuring of the city’s Catholic school system. Mr. Brennan loved to travel and ride motorcycles, and was an avid photographer and collector. He is survived by Jeanne Brennan, his beloved wife of nearly 60 years; his son, Marty and his wife Debby Brennan (of Halifax, Pa.); his daughter, Nancy (of New York City); his grandchildren, Jasmine (and her husband Dan Rudy), Marty, and Ryan Brennan; his great-grandson, Daniel Rudy; his sister, Ellen Couper of Rhode Island; his brother, Tom Brennan of South Carolina; and many loving extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Regina (Brennan) Origoni, Martin Brennan, and Joseph Brennan. His family will receive visitors at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, NJ, 145 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 17. On Friday, November 18, a funeral will be held from Quinn-Hopping at 10 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, 28 Livingston Avenue, Roseland, New Jersey. Interment will follow immediately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Avenue, East Hanover, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Roseland First Aid Squad, 300 Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland, New Jersey 07068.

Luciano Rega

Luciano Rega, 82, of Livingston, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 21, 2016. He was retired after working many years as a chef at Nero’s in Livingston. Luciano was a member of the Livingston Knights of Columbus, the ARR, and the Old Guard. The beloved husband of 47 years to Annamaria Rega (Sica), he was the devoted father of Norma Iossa and her husband Gino, and Madalena MacArthur and her husband, Brian; the cherished grandfather of Alyssa and Jenna, and Victoria, Owen, and Kyle; the dear brother of Suzie, Mary, Leo, and the late George, Benny, Gaby and Russ. Visitation will take place at the Leonardis Memorial Home, 210 Ridgedale Avenue, Florham Park, on Wednesday, November 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will take place on Friday, November 25, assembling at 9 a.m., and will be followed by a Mass at St. Raphael’s Church in Livingston at 10 a.m. Entombment will take place at Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover. David Umanoff Succumbs to Cancer

Former Livingston resident David Umanoff died Sunday, November 13, in Boynton Beach, Florida, after a three year battle with multiple myeloma. He and his wife, Shelly, moved to Livingston in 1968 and lived here until moving to Florida in 2010. Mr. Umanoff was predeceased by his daughter Sandy. In addition to his wife, Shelly, he is survived by a son, Michael. The family has suggested that donations in his memory be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (www.themmrf.org).

On Monday, November 14, 2016, Dorothy Panzer Kurzweil, of Livingston, New Jersey passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Newark, New Jersey to the late Belle and Benjamin Panzer and stepfather Morris Magenheim, she was the beloved wife of predeceased Milburn S. Kurzweil; sister to her beloved siblings, Hy and Irving Panzer, Irving and Herbert Magenheim, and Lillian Sylvin; devoted mother of Brett Kurzweil of Garfield, New Jersey, Drew Kurzweil of New Orleans, Louisiana, Ross Kurzweil of New York, New York (Nancy Chin), and Shawn Kurzweil of Livingston, New Jersey (Adam Abelew); and loving grandmother of Danielle Kurzweil, Madeline and Sophie Abelew. Mrs. Kurzweil spent the first part of her life as a devoted homemaker, using unconditional love to raise her four children. She was involved in Cub Scouts, LEADA, ORT, Bnai Brith and Sisterhood of Temple Beth Shalom for many years. In 1983, she decided to pursue her second career and entered Kean College, where she received her BSW, and then earned her MSW from New York University (NYU) in 1990. She then began her remarkable career as a clinical social worker at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. While there, she provided endless support to mothers and fathers, initially in pediatrics, the NICU and ultimately, maternal child care for over two decades. During this time, a second family flourished with all her well-respected Saint Barnabas colleagues. She ran a perinatal bereavement group, and guided over a thousand mothers and fathers through the tragic road of loss. Mrs. Kurzweil was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and Perinatal Social Workers. As an example of Mrs. Kurzweil’s remarkable character, she requested that in lieu of flowers, gifts or donations, she asked that people hug a loved one and hope for peace. Anita Smith Dies at Age 99

Anita Smith, a Livingston resident and volunteer for almost 50 years, died on Sunday, November 20, in West Caldwell at Crane’s Mill retirement community. Born in the Bronx, she was married to Dr. Gadiel Smith, who died at the age of 100 in 2013. A volunteer for many causes and active in Temple Emanu-El of West Essex, her funeral is scheduled for today, Wednesday, November 23, at 10:45 a.m. at Cedar Park Cemetery/Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus. Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters, Tina and Debbie; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Former Livingston resident Patricia Agresta, 73, died on Sunday, November 20. Mrs. Agresta was born in Newark to the late John Marinaro and Anne (Mascola) Marinaro, and raised in Belleville. She lived in Bloomfield, Livingston and Fairfield before moving to Cape May County seven years ago. She was the vice-president of Gebroe-Hammer Associates in Livingston for 32 years. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Nicholas; a daughter, Lisa Elliott; her sisters, Joanne Cozzolino and husband, Vincent, and Karen Priore; a sister-in-law, Irene Wendling and her husband, Frank; and two grandchildren. Josephine Musumeci Dies in Livingston

Longtime resident Josephine Musumeci died on Thursday, November 24, in Livingston. She worked for many years as a secretary for the East Hanover Recreation Department, and was a member of the St. Philomena’s Rosary Altar Society and the Livingston VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Born in Newark, Mrs. Musumeci was predeceased by her daughter, Rosanne Fanning, and her son Paul Musumeci. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Joseph; her children Joseph, Luann Melillo (Stephan), and Robert (Fabiola); her son-in-law, Patrick Fanning; and nine grandchildren. Stella Ann Oleksiak

Stella Ann Oleksiak, 90, died November 17, 2016 at Spring Arbor West in Hendersonville, North Carolina. She was born on February 10, 1926 in Newark to the late Joseph and Anna Rosin. Stella received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Montclair State University; she was the first in her family to graduate from college. She enjoyed a successful career as a high school teacher with the Livingston public school system, teaching a variety of subjects including English, history and sociology. She was instrumental in developing the high school’s independent studies program, and served as a mentor to students in the program. In 1975 she received the Hannah G. Solomon award from the Livingston Division, National Council of Jewish Women, to honor her dedication to teaching and her students. Stella would continue her love of learning and teaching throughout her life. In 1947 she married Edward S. Oleksiak and together they raised two children, Edward J. Oleksiak and Linda O. Zembron. She spent her retirement years in Normandy Beach, New Jersey; Estero, Florida; and Toms River, New Jersey, where she enjoyed competitive tennis, painting, dancing and spending time with family and friends. She moved to Hendersonville, NC in 2009 to be near her son and daughter-in-law who facilitated her care at Lake Pointe Landing and later at Spring Arbor West. Stella was predeceased by her husband, Edward; her four siblings, Peter Rosin, Helen Buddie, Alexandra Hall, Sophie Arnashus; and by her cherished companion John Bass. She is survived by her son E.J. (Carol) Oleksiak of Hendersonville, North Carolina her grandson Joseph (Elizabeth) Oleksiak and great-grandson Finley of Portland, Oregon; her granddaughter Katherine Oleksiak Kalama and great-grandson Coda of Waialua, Hawaii; her daughter Linda (John) Zembron of Ridgefield, Connecticut; her grandson John Edward (Lauren) Zembron and great-grandchildren Lily and Jack of Medfield, Massachusetts; her granddaughter Anne Zembron of Portland; her sister-in-law Alice Oleksiak; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Spring Arbor West and Four Seasons Compassion for Life for the loving care they provided to Stella. Services will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at Our Lady of Angels Chapel at Immaculate Conception Church in Hendersonville. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, New Jersey after the New Year. Funeral this Saturday For William A. Albert

William A. Albert, of Parsippany, formerly of Livingston, died Wednesday, November 30, at Morristown Medical Center. He was 73 years old. Visitation will be held this Saturday, December 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at S.J. Priola Parsippany Funeral Service in Lake Hiawatha, with funeral services to begin at 1 p.m. Born and raised in Livingston, Mr. Albert was a resident of Caldwell, before moving to Parsippany, more than 50 years ago. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War era. A member of the Teamsters Local 560, Mr. Albert was, for many years, a truck driver with the ABF Trucking Company (formerly Carolina and Consolidated Trucking) of Pine Brook. He retired eight years ago. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Valerie (nee Neslen); three children, Joseph Albert and his wife, Terri, of Australia; Shane Albert and his wife, Tammie, of Jacksonville, Florida; and Toni Albert of Parsippany; a brother, Richard Albert; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Albert.

Beverly Lay, 83 Dies in Florida

Former Livingston resident Beverly Lay died at home at DeLand, Florida on November 26. Born in Maplewood, Mrs. Lay was graduated from Columbia High School. She resided in Livingston from 1960 to 1983, and was retired from the Prudential Insurance Company in Roseland. She is survived by her husband, John L. Lay, who she married in 1954. She is also survived by four children, including Ellen; Susan and her husband, Dave Scott; Claire; and David and his wife, Alissa; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Jean Newman, and her husband, Dan. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Services Thursday For Murray Sklar

Murray Sklar, 92, of Livingston died Monday, December 12. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, December 15, at Temple Beth Shalom of Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth Shalom. Mr. Sklar was born in Newark, New Jersey and was graduated from Weequahic High School in 1943. A Marine, he served during World War II, fighting in the battles of Saipan and Okinawa. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Corporal. After attending The Citadel for two years, he attended the Newark College of Engineering, now NJIT. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and his professional engineering license. Mr. Sklar worked for Fada Radio and Electric, then for ITT Laboratories, where he worked on the first Talos missile program. He then joined Lockheed Electronics in Plainfield, where he spent the rest of his professional career until retiring in 1990. Mr. Sklar was a past president of Temple Beth Shalom and a past president of the temple’s Men’s Club. He was a past Commandant of the West Hudson Marine Corps League and served 14 years as state Chaplain for the New Jersey Marine Corps League. He was made Honorary Past State Commandant of the New Jersey Marine Corps League, and voted Marine of the Year. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans Post 740 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2856, both in Livingston. Predeceased by his sisters, Carolyne Sklar Freidin and Margaret Miller, Mr. Sklar is survived by his wife of 68 years, Harriet; his son, Charles; his daughter, Robin (Ken); and one grandchild.
